Motion study
Motion studies is the study of actions like lifting, putting things down, sitting, shifting positions, and other actions that are made when performing a routine work. In order to execute the task effectively in less time, unnecessary movements are attempted to be removed. For instance, Taylor and his collaborator Frank Gailberth were able to minimise the number of moves required for laying bricks from 18 to only 5. Taylor showed that this approach improved output by a factor of roughly four.
For instance, by paying great attention to bodily movements, one can identify :-
- motions that are productive
- motions that are incidental (like going to the store), and
- actions that are unproductive.
The objective of motion study are
1. To differentiate between productive and unproductive movement.
2. To eliminate unproductive and wasteful movement.
3. To design suitable equipment and tools to eliminate unproductive movement.
To distinguish between various motions, Taylor employed stopwatches as well as various symbols and coloured.
Taylor was able to designs suitable equipment and tools to educate workers on their use the results achieved by him were truly remarkable.
